A Roman nose (sometimes written as a convex or high-bridged nose) carries a gentle outward curve on the upper third of the dorsum, close to the root, with the rest of the bridge descending in a strong straight run to a tip that angles slightly downward. The bone is prominent, the dorsal line is unbroken by any sharp break, and the whole nose projects forward more than average. Named after the profile busts of the Roman republic, it belongs to the convex family alongside aquiline, hawk and hooked forms.
Measured on a lateral photograph, the type reads as follows. Nasofrontal angle usually sits at the tight end of the 115 to 130 degree band, because the root is deep and the convexity begins almost immediately below it. Nasolabial angle drops to roughly 85 to 95 degrees, the numeric version of a tip that points down rather than forward. Goode projection often exceeds 0.60. Nasal index tends to stay under 70, since the alar base is narrow relative to a long nose.

Where the convexity sits on the bridge
Convexity high on the dorsum is the defining trait. Place a straight edge from nasion to tip on a side photograph. On this shape the gap opens in the upper third, widest around the level of the inner eye corner, then closes as the line descends. The bulge is smooth, low in amplitude, and made mostly of nasal bone rather than cartilage.
Below that curve the bridge runs straight and firm to the supratip. There is no second break. The tip cartilage is usually well defined and rotated slightly downward, and the columella follows it, which shortens the visible nostril opening from the front.
Skin over a raised dorsum tends to be thinner at the crest, so the highlight there is brighter than on flatter forms.
Measurements that place the type
Four readings settle it. Take them from a true lateral frame, not a three-quarter one.

A nose matching three of the four is worth checking against the neighboring types below before you settle on a name.
Roman compared with aquiline
Position and amplitude separate the two. On a Roman nose the curve sits high, near the bony vault, and it is shallow enough that the overall impression stays a straight strong line. On an aquiline nose the curve sits mid-dorsum, further from the root, and the amplitude is larger, so the profile reads as an arc rather than a line with a rise in it.
Popular writing uses the two words interchangeably, and plenty of style articles treat them as one shape. The usual distinction in surgical and anthropometric description is exactly the one above: height of the hump on the bridge, plus how pronounced it is.
Two more neighbors are worth ruling out. A hawk nose adds a thin blade-like dorsum and a sharper angle. A Greek nose has no convexity at all, which the straight edge test settles in a second.
Front view compared with side view
Head-on, this shape gives little away. A high dorsal curve sits in the sagittal plane, so the camera sees it end-on and it disappears into the central highlight. What the frontal frame does show is a narrow base, a bridge that reads slightly wider at the top than at the supratip, and a tip shadow that falls lower on the lip than it does on upturned forms.
The lateral frame carries the whole diagnosis. Side light rakes across the crest and the convexity throws a small shadow onto the slope below it, which is why a profile shot under window light exaggerates the curve.

Shadow and highlight over a raised bridge
Contour moves light, and on a projecting dorsum there is already plenty of it. The crest catches a hard highlight from any frontal source, which is why an untouched flash photo makes the bridge look brighter and higher than it does in the mirror.
- Set a matte shade one to two tones deeper along both slopes, running the full length of the bridge.
- Soften that shadow across the high point so the curve reads as a continuous plane rather than two separate faces.
- Keep any highlight thin and short, or drop it entirely, since the bone supplies its own.
- Use a translucent powder over the crest to knock back specular shine before it hits the camera.
Directional light does more than product here. A large diffused source placed in front, rather than above or to one side, flattens the shadow the curve casts.
Frames, pads and a deep root
Bridge fit depends on where the frame lands relative to the highest point of the dorsum. A deep-set nasal root with a curve just below it means a fixed bridge often rests on the convexity itself, pushing the frame forward and away from the face.
Adjustable nose pads solve this best. Pads sit on the side walls below the crest, so the frame clears the high point entirely and the lenses stay close to the eyes. Keyhole bridges also work, since the cutout arches over the crest instead of resting on it.
Avoid a low saddle bridge that presses flat across the top. Frames with a slightly raised, wider bridge placement suit the shape better, and they keep the frame line above the curve where it reads as a horizontal counterbalance.
Camera distance and the widening effect
Close-range lenses lie about width. A phone held 25 centimeters away magnifies the nearest feature, so the nose photographs broader and the tip photographs larger, which pushes the calculated nasal index up by several points and makes the projection look more extreme than it is.
Shoot instead from about two meters and crop in, or hand the phone to someone else and use the rear lens. Keep the camera at eye height, because tilting it up shortens the visible bridge and tilting it down lengthens it.
