A hooked nose (described in clinical notes as a nose with a ptotic or downward-rotated tip) is defined at the tip rather than the bridge. The tip cartilage curves downward and projects past the point where the columella meets the upper lip, so the lowest part of the nose sits forward of the nasolabial junction. A dorsal hump often accompanies it, though the hump is a frequent companion rather than a requirement.
The lateral readings are specific. Nasolabial angle drops below 90 degrees, and readings in the 75 to 88 degree band are typical, which is the numeric statement of a tip pointing down. Nasofrontal angle usually falls in the standard 115 to 130 degree range. Goode projection commonly exceeds 0.60. Nasal index varies widely across people with this tip geometry, from leptorrhine values under 70 to mesorrhine values up to 85, because tip rotation and base width are independent of each other.

Tip drop below the nasolabial junction
Tip position carries the whole definition. On a lateral photograph, drop a vertical line through the point where the columella meets the upper lip. If the tip sits forward of that line and lower than the columellar base, the descriptor applies.
Three structures produce it. Lower lateral cartilages that are long and angled downward pull the tip along with them. A caudal septum that extends past the cartilage supports the tip in that position. And in many people the depressor septi muscle draws the tip further down during speech and smiling, which is why the shape looks stronger in candid photographs than in still ones.
A dorsal hump often sits above all this, because the same skeletal pattern that produces a convex bridge frequently produces a long caudal septum. The two travel together without depending on each other.
A note on the term itself
This descriptor carries a history that a geometry page has to name. Caricature and propaganda have used exaggerated drawings of downward-curving noses to mark ethnic and religious groups, particularly Jewish people, for well over a century. That history is why the word arrives loaded, and it is a fact about the caricature, not about anybody's face.
Everything on this page is descriptive. It reports where cartilage sits, what angle it makes, and how light falls across it. No shape here is better or worse than any other, none of them needs changing, and the styling notes are about controlling reflection, the same as they are on every other page in this silo.
If the term itself sits badly with you, the neutral alternatives in clinical writing are "downward-rotated tip" or "ptotic tip", and they describe exactly the same geometry.

The first two settle the description. The last three record how much else varies among people who share it.
Shapes it sits beside
Confusion comes from the convex family, since a hump appears in all of them.
- Aquiline: the arc is the defining trait and the tip need not drop. Tip rotation separates them.
- Roman: shallow high convexity, tip angled down only slightly, nasolabial angle staying at or above 90 degrees.
- Hawk: a thin, sharply angled dorsum. Dorsal thickness separates them.
- Greek: no convexity and a neutral tip, so neither test applies.
Ask the tip question first. If the tip clears the nasolabial line, the bridge decides the rest.
Head-on appearance against the profile
Frontal photographs record surprisingly little. Downward tip rotation shortens the visible nostril opening, so the nostrils read as thin slivers or vanish behind the tip, and the tip itself casts a longer shadow onto the philtrum than upturned forms do. Base width and nasal length read normally.
The profile view holds everything else. A raking side light emphasizes both the crest and the underside of the tip, which is why window-lit portraits look markedly different from flash-lit ones on this geometry.

Contour and lighting along a downward tip
Contour moves light. It does not move cartilage, and nothing here needs moving.
- Set the light source high and frontal, since a low source deepens the shadow beneath the tip and a side source lengthens it across the lip.
- Keep the bridge highlight short, stopping it above the supratip rather than running it onto the tip.
- Blend a soft matte shade under the tip only if you want the shadow there to read shorter, and keep the edges diffuse.
- Draw attention upward with brow shape and lash definition, which shifts the visual weight of the portrait.
Matte finishes hold up better than shimmer under flash, because a projecting tip returns a strong specular highlight that shimmer amplifies.
Eyewear bridge fit
Frame bridges interact with the dorsum, not the tip, so a hump is the fitting variable. A fixed saddle bridge resting flat on a raised crest tips the frame forward and slides down the slope.
Adjustable nose pads give the most control. Pads sit on the side walls, clear the crest, and let you set how close the lenses sit to the eyes. Keyhole bridges also arch over a high point rather than sitting on it.
Frame shape matters visually too. A bridge line set slightly higher, with a horizontal top bar, gives the eye a strong lateral line to read against the vertical of the profile. Rimless or thin metal frames leave the dorsum uninterrupted if you prefer less contrast, and either choice is a matter of taste.
Camera distance and honest framing
Short-focal-length lenses at close range enlarge whatever sits nearest them. On a face that is the nose, so a phone held 25 centimeters away widens the base, magnifies the tip, and steepens apparent projection. An arm's-length selfie is not a fair reading of any nasal measurement.
Shoot from about two meters with the rear camera, keep the lens at eye level, and crop afterward. For the profile frame, turn the head until one ear points squarely away from the lens, chin level, expression neutral, because a smile pulls the tip down further.
