A Nubian nose (also written as an East African or platyrrhine-tending nose) pairs long nasal length with a wide alar base. The dorsum usually runs straight or slightly concave rather than convex, the bridge sits lower than on leptorrhine forms, the nostrils are broad and often rounded, and the tip carries a moderate amount of soft tissue. The name comes from the Nubian region along the Nile, and the configuration is common across West African populations and their diaspora.

Measured, the combination is distinctive. Nasal index runs high, frequently above 85, which places it in the platyrrhine band, and mesorrhine readings of 70 to 85 appear in mixed configurations. Nasal length, from nasion to the base of the columella, sits at or above average even while base width is large, and that pairing is what separates this description from other broad-based forms. Nasofrontal angle tends toward the open end of the 115 to 130 degree range. Nasolabial angle usually lands between 90 and 100 degrees.

Length and base width together

Two traits define this description, and both have to be present. Nasal length is measured vertically from nasion down to the columellar base. Alar base width is measured horizontally across the outermost points of the nostrils. A long nose with a narrow base is a different description entirely, and so is a short nose with a broad one.

Because the index divides width by height, a long nose needs a genuinely wide base to push the figure above 85. That is what makes the pairing worth naming rather than treating as two separate observations.

The dorsum itself is usually straight, sometimes with a shallow concavity in the upper third. Bridge height, measured from the plane of the cheeks, tends to be low, and the tip is round rather than pointed with the lower lateral cartilages set wide apart.

Anthropometric context, stated neutrally

Anthropometry has measured nasal proportions since the nineteenth century, and a great deal of that early work was tied to race science that has been discredited on its own terms. Modern craniofacial measurement kept the geometry and discarded the hierarchy.

The nasal index is a ratio. It tells you how broad a nose is relative to its height, it varies with ancestry the way stature and skin tone vary with ancestry, and it supports no ranking of any kind. Nothing in this description implies that any reading needs changing.

Where the figures are useful is practical. Frame fitting, photographic lighting and makeup placement all depend on real dimensions, so knowing the numbers makes those choices easier. That is the only purpose they serve on this site.

Types it overlaps with

Broad-based descriptions run into each other, so isolate the deciding trait.

  • Flat or wide: shares the high index and the low bridge, but nasal length is shorter. Length is the divider.
  • Fleshy: named for soft tissue thickness across the tip and nostrils. Skin thickness decides it, not width.
  • Bulbous: the tip cartilage is wide while the base need not be. Look at the tip alone.
  • Snub: short and upturned, which the length measurement rules out immediately.

Measure length first. It settles three of these four in one step.

What each camera angle records

Frontal photographs are unusually informative on this shape, because both defining traits lie in the frontal plane. Width across the nostrils, vertical length, tip breadth, nostril outline and midline deviation all read directly from a square-on frame.

The lateral frame adds bridge height, the two angles and projection. It matters less here than on convex forms, since the dorsal line carries little of the description, but it is still the only view that shows how far the bridge stands out from the cheeks.

That makes this one of the few types a front camera can largely place. Most of the twelve names in the nose shapes silo depend on a curve the frontal view never records, so this is the exception rather than the rule.

Light placement across a broad base

Light does the work here, and product only redirects it. A wide, low bridge returns a broad soft highlight under frontal light and almost none under side light, which is why the same face photographs differently in two rooms.

  • Place a matte shade slightly deeper than the skin along the outer edges of the alar creases, following the natural curve rather than drawing a straight line.
  • Keep the central highlight narrow and stop it above the tip, since a wide highlight spreads the reflection outward.
  • Blend the upper end into the inner brow area so the root does not read as a separate stripe of color.
  • Choose finishes by depth: on deeper skin tones, a slightly warm matte reads more naturally than a gray-based contour shade.

Depth matching is measurable. The Fitzpatrick scale sorts skin by response to sun exposure, and the Individual Typology Angle derived from CIE L*a*b* values gives a numeric depth reading, which is more dependable than eyeballing an undertone in shop lighting.

Frames for a low root and wide base

Frame fit follows bridge height, and a low root is the fitting variable. Standard Western frame patterns assume a high, narrow root, so a fixed bridge often rests too high and leaves the lenses sitting away from the face while the frame slides down.

Adjustable nose pads handle it directly, since you can widen the pad spread and lower the sit height until the frame rests on the side walls rather than the crest. Frames marketed as low-bridge or alternative-fit build that geometry in, with a lower bridge placement, deeper pads and a wider distance between lenses.

Keyhole bridges are less useful here, because they need a raised crest to straddle. A saddle bridge with a low set point works better.

Photographic conditions for a fair reading

Close lenses distort width more than any other dimension, which matters on a shape defined partly by width. A phone at 25 centimeters magnifies the nose relative to the rest of the face and can push a calculated index several points higher than the true figure.

Shoot from about two meters, rear camera, lens at eye level, then crop. Add exposure for deeper skin tones rather than letting automatic metering underexpose, because underexposure loses the edge of the alar crease and the measurement goes with it.
