Face shapes covered
An aquiline nose (from aquilinus, eagle-like) shows a pronounced convex arc across the middle of the dorsum, deeper and lower down the bridge than the gentle rise found on Roman profiles. The line leaves the root fairly straight, bows outward around the junction of bone and upper lateral cartilage, then falls to a tip that usually points slightly downward. Base width stays moderate, projection is strong, and the whole silhouette reads as a curve rather than a straight edge with a bump on it.
The lateral measurements cluster tightly. Nasofrontal angle commonly lands between 115 and 125 degrees. Nasolabial angle falls to about 85 to 95 degrees because tip rotation is low. Goode projection frequently passes 0.60, and the maximum dorsal gap under a straight edge sits at or below the midpoint of the nasion-to-tip line rather than near the top of it. Nasal index usually stays inside the leptorrhine band, below 70, though mesorrhine readings up to 85 are common in wider-based versions.
Leslie Farkas compiled the craniofacial norms these ranges are compared against, and none of them ranks one profile above another. They describe position and amount of curve, nothing else.

The mid-dorsal arc that names the shape
Position is what the name is about. Draw the straight edge from root to tip on a side photograph and measure where the gap beneath it is widest. On this shape that maximum sits mid-dorsum, roughly level with the lower eyelid or a little below, and it is deep enough to be obvious at conversational distance.
The arc is smooth and continuous. It rises out of the bony vault, carries across the cartilaginous section, and rejoins the line above the tip without a sharp corner. A corner instead of a curve moves the description toward the hawk or hooked family.
Tip cartilage is typically defined, moderately narrow, and rotated down. The columella follows the tip, so nostril show from the front is small.
Aquiline and Roman used interchangeably
Popular writing treats the two words as synonyms, and much of the styling press uses whichever sounds better in the sentence. That is worth saying plainly, because a reader comparing three articles will find the same profile called both things.
The usual distinction in anthropometric and surgical description is straightforward. A Roman nose curves high on the bridge, close to the root, and the convexity is shallow, so the profile still reads as a strong straight line. The aquiline form curves lower, around mid-dorsum, and the convexity is larger, so the profile reads as an arc.
Two variables, then: where the hump sits, and how much of it there is. High and shallow on one side, mid and pronounced on the other. Everything else the two share.

Take all five from one frame. Mixing readings across photographs shot at different distances produces numbers that contradict each other.
Shapes it neighbors
Four comparisons cover almost every misfiling.
- Roman: same family, higher and shallower curve. Position of the maximum gap decides it.
- Hawk: thinner dorsum and a sharper angle at the crest, giving a blade rather than a bow.
- Hooked: the deciding feature is the tip, which drops below the nasolabial junction, not the bridge.
- Greek: no dorsal gap at all under the straight edge.
One test each. Curve position, dorsal thickness, tip drop, presence of a gap.
What each camera angle records
Frontal photographs record almost nothing about this shape. The arc lies in the plane the lens is pointing along, so it collapses into the central highlight and disappears. What you can read head-on is base width, nasal length, tip breadth and any deviation from the facial midline.
The lateral frame carries the diagnosis on its own. Side lighting across the crest deepens the shadow underneath the arc, so a profile taken beside a window overstates the curve, while flat frontal fill understates it.

Contour that follows the arc
Makeup changes how light falls across the dorsum. It does not change the bone underneath, and the aim here is control of the highlight, not concealment.
- Sweep a matte shade two tones deeper along both side walls, carrying it across the widest part of the arc so the curve reads as one plane.
- Feather the upper end into the brow shadow rather than stopping it in a hard line at the root.
- Leave the crest itself unhighlighted, because a projecting mid-bridge already returns the brightest reflection on the face.
- Powder the high point matte before a flash photograph, since specular shine there reads as extra height.

Eyewear bridges over a mid-bridge hump
Frame fit is governed by the crest. A mid-dorsal high point sits exactly where many fixed bridges want to rest, and a frame perched on the arc tips forward, drops down the slope, and leaves the lenses too far from the eyes.
Adjustable nose pads are the most reliable answer, because they carry weight on the side walls well below the crest and let you set both height and vertex distance. Keyhole bridges are the next best option, arching clear of the high point.
Saddle bridges, which spread flat across the top of the dorsum, tend to sit directly on the hump and slide. If you like acetate frames, look for a keyhole cut or an integrated pad arm rather than a plain saddle.
Focal length, distance and honest measurement
Short focal lengths at close range enlarge whatever is nearest the lens. On a face that is the nose, so a phone selfie at 25 to 30 centimeters broadens the base, magnifies the tip, and exaggerates apparent projection. The nasal index calculated from that frame can run several points high.
Better practice: two meters of distance, rear camera, eye-level framing, then crop. For the profile, rotate the head until one ear points squarely away from the lens, and keep the chin level.
