A hawk nose (a strongly convex dorsal profile with a drooping tip) combines a pronounced outward curve along the bridge with a thin, well-projected tip that points downward. The curve is the first half of the description and the tip direction is the second. Both have to be present.

Numbers describe it precisely. Dorsal deviation, the perpendicular offset between the real bridge line and a straight nasion-to-tip line, runs positive and larger than on any other named type. Tip projection sits at or above the conventional 0.55 to 0.60 ratio against nasal length. The columella meets the upper lip at a closed angle, frequently under 90 degrees and sometimes below 85, against the usual 90 to 95 degrees in men and 95 to 110 in women. The nasofrontal angle at the root stays inside the standard 115 to 130 degree window, often at its lower end because a high root closes that corner. Nasal index, width over height times 100, generally reads leptorrhine below 70, since height is long and the base is narrow.

What defines the convex bridge and dropped tip

Definition rests on two features working together. The dorsum rises from the root and then bows outward along its middle length, forming a continuous convex arc rather than the localized bump some profiles carry near the top.

Tip direction completes it. The tip-defining points sit below the line extended from the nasion through the mid-dorsum, so the lobule reads as pointing down, and the columella tucks back toward the lip instead of standing away from it.

Structure at the tip runs narrow. Skin over the lower third tends to be thin to medium, the cartilage domes sit close together, and the result is a defined, sometimes sharp point.

The base stays narrow. Alar flare is limited, nostril openings are long and slim, and the lower third occupies little horizontal width. Length usually runs above average, which is why the profile reads as prominent even at moderate projection.

Measuring convexity against a straight reference

Convexity measurement needs one true side photograph, camera at eye height, gaze horizontal, ear visible. Draw a straight line joining the nasion and the tip-defining point, then look at where the bridge sits relative to it.

Positive deviation means the bridge sits in front of the reference line. Measure the maximum gap and note where along the dorsum it occurs, because peak position is what separates the profiles compared next.

Then check the tip separately. Extend a second line out of the root through the middle of the dorsum and see whether the tip finishes below it. Convexity with a level or lifted tip is a different reading entirely.

A plain note on the name

Names carry history. This one comes from bird-of-prey imagery, it has been used in caricature and in ethnic stereotyping for well over a century, and that is worth stating rather than ignoring.

Nothing in the geometry supports any of it. A dorsal curve and a downward tip angle describe cartilage, bone and skin, and they indicate nothing about ancestry, character, health or anything else about a person. This page uses the word as a shape label and for no other purpose.

The vocabulary survives in surgical and illustration work, which need terms for the dorsal line and the tip. The framework attached to it in the nineteenth century did not, and should not.

The boundary against aquiline and Roman profiles

Three convex profiles share a family, and they separate on degree and on where the curve peaks.

  • Roman: gentle convexity high on the bridge near the root, tip usually level.
  • Aquiline: more pronounced curve centered on the mid-dorsum, tip more likely to drop.
  • Hawk: the strongest curve of the three, with a thin tip clearly angled down.

Tip angle decides the rest. A closed columella angle under 90 degrees paired with a large positive deviation puts a profile at the far end of this family. Anything gentler belongs to one of its neighbors, and the front view will not settle it for you.

Front and profile behavior

Front-on this shape can hide almost completely. A narrow base, a slim bridge and a defined tip produce a compact frontal outline, and the convex curve running away from the camera contributes no width at all.

What does show from the front is a bright, uninterrupted highlight down the dorsum, because a convex surface catches light along its length. On a strong curve that highlight may break into two segments.

Profile carries everything else. The curve, the peak position, the columella angle and the projection are all side-view quantities, and a frontal photograph cannot supply any of them. That difference between views also determines where any makeup goes.

Light placement on a curved bridge

Placement follows one rule: shadow makes a surface recede, highlight brings it forward. Applied to a convex dorsum that changes the light, not the structure, and nothing here implies a nose needs altering.

Shadow goes on the highest part of the curve, laid as a small soft patch over the peak rather than a line down the whole bridge. Keep it narrow and blend both edges out completely, since a visible boundary reads as a mark instead of a shading effect.

Highlight goes above and below the peak, in two short segments, one near the root and one at the supratip. That pair softens the apparent break by lifting the areas either side of it toward the same brightness.

Leave the tip alone. Highlight on a downward-pointing lobule strengthens the visible angle, which is the opposite of what the shading above is doing. Frames sitting on this bridge follow a related geometry.

Eyewear that clears a prominent dorsum

Clearance is the whole eyewear question, since a frame bridge landing on the peak slides forward and sits crooked.

  • Keyhole bridge: clears the top of the dorsum entirely and grips the sides, which handles a high bridge well.
  • Saddle bridge: rests across the full upper surface and needs a fairly even curve to sit flat, so it works only if the bow is gentle.
  • Adjustable pads: can be spread wide and set high, keeping the frame above the peak where the surface is more even.

Frame placement changes proportion too. A front sitting high covers the root and shortens the visible bridge length, while a low-set frame exposes more of the dorsal line. Frame width should match cheekbone width.

None of these judgments hold if the photograph you are working from distorts the profile.

Profile capture and camera distance

Capture quality decides whether a curve measurement means anything. Rotation is the biggest error: fifteen degrees off a true side view flattens an apparent bow and shifts the columella angle by several degrees.

Set the camera at eye height, turn a full ninety degrees, keep the gaze horizontal, and have someone else take the frame. Self-shot profiles rotate almost every time, and the direction of that rotation always understates the curve.

Distance matters as much. Short focal length phone lenses at arm's reach enlarge whatever leads the face, so a straight-on selfie widens the base and a close side shot exaggerates projection. Stand about five feet away, use the rear camera, and crop in.
