Face shapes covered
A fleshy nose (thick-skin nasal morphology in surgical vocabulary) measures broad from root to base, carries more soft tissue than average over its whole framework, and shows little cartilage edge anywhere along its surface. Breadth is the point. This label describes neither the tip alone nor the profile line.
Structure sits under a thick cover. The bony vault and cartilages may be entirely ordinary in size, but skin and subcutaneous tissue several millimeters thicker than average round off every line, so the dorsum presents a soft ridge and the lobule a full curve. Alar base width usually runs wide, and the nostril rims are thick rather than sharp.
Angles stay conventional. The nasofrontal angle at the root keeps to the usual 115 to 130 degree band, and the columella meets the upper lip near 90 to 95 degrees in men or 95 to 110 in women. What moves is the index. Nose width divided by nose height times 100 often reads mesorrhine at 70 to 85 and can pass 85 into platyrrhine territory, since the width term grows while height stays put.

Broad along the whole length
Breadth here is continuous, and that is the whole classification. Run a finger from root to base: the top surface stays wide the entire way, with no narrow section near the eyes and no sudden expansion at the end.
The dorsum forms a rounded ridge rather than a defined edge. Where a slim nose gives a single crisp highlight line down the middle, this one gives a wide soft band, because the surface curves gradually across its width instead of meeting at an apex.
The base is wide too. Alar flare carries the outer nostril rims past the vertical lines dropped from the inner corners of the eyes, which is the reference the neoclassical facial canons use for average nasal width.
Length is ordinary: a normal middle facial third, so the nose reads full rather than short or long.
How thick tissue hides the framework
Tissue thickness explains almost every visual property of this type. Skin over the nasal dorsum and tip varies by several millimeters between individuals, and the thicker it runs, the less of the cartilage beneath it reaches the surface.
Sebaceous glands concentrate over the lower two thirds, and skin dense with them holds more volume and oil. That combination scatters light instead of reflecting a clean highlight, so definition drops even where the underlying cartilage is well formed.
Three consequences follow. Shadows land softer, edges blur, and small details visible on thin skin do not appear. None of that is a defect, and none of it needs treating.
Surface measurement therefore understates the framework, since the reading includes the cover as well as the structure. That point drives the distinction below.
The clean separation from a rounded tip
One question sorts these two labels: where is the width?

Take the deciding test at the eye line. Measure the bridge level with the inner eye corners, then measure the widest part of the tip. Two similar numbers with both running wide describe the shape on this page. A slim upper reading with a much wider lower one describes a bulbous tip instead.
The two overlap freely. A nose can be broad throughout and undefined at the end, so both words apply, both describe rather than judge, and neither implies anything about anyone.
Nasal index and alar base measurement
Index calculation needs two distances from a level front photograph. Measure maximum width across the outer edges of the nostrils, then measure height from the nasion between the eyes down to the subnasale where the columella meets the lip. Divide the first by the second and multiply by 100.
Three bands describe the result. Below 70 is leptorrhine, 70 to 85 is mesorrhine, and above 85 is platyrrhine. These are proportion labels from physical anthropology, they describe ratios only, and they carry no ranking of any kind.
One common error: measuring across the nostril openings rather than the outer alar edges, which reads narrow by several millimeters. Take the width at the widest visible point of the rims, head level, camera at eye height, and repeat on a second photograph.
Height errors come from tilt. A chin dropped even slightly shortens the vertical term and inflates the index, which is an error the two viewing angles handle differently.
Frontal outline against side outline
Frontally this shape declares itself. Width shows at every level, the dorsal highlight spreads wide, and the alar rims form the outer boundary of a lower third that occupies real horizontal space.
In profile it can look unremarkable. The dorsal line may run straight, faintly convex or faintly concave, and none of those readings alter the label. What the side view adds is supratip thickness, where a full soft-tissue pad rounds the transition above the tip.
So classify from the front and confirm from the side. Both frames also tell you where light is landing, which is where any makeup decision starts.
Managing shine across a wide dorsum
Shine is the practical issue on skin this thick, and it changes how the shape photographs more than contour does. Oil across a broad curved surface creates a wide specular highlight, which reads as extra width.
Matte primer and a light setting powder over the dorsum and tip cut that highlight down. Applied thinly, they narrow the apparent top surface without a stroke of contour.
Where contour is used, place soft shadow along both outer edges of the bridge, running parallel from the inner brow to the alar crease, and blend until no boundary is visible. Then set a narrow line of highlight down the exact middle. The pair works because a bright center between two darker edges reads as a raised ridge. It is a lighting effect and nothing else.
Skip shimmer entirely. On thick skin it amplifies the scatter you were trying to control, and the same width considerations apply to what sits across the bridge.
Frame proportion on a wide bridge
Proportion is the main eyewear question here, since a wide bridge needs a bridge measurement to match or the frame will pinch and sit high.
- Saddle bridge: rests across the whole top surface and spreads weight, which suits a wide dorsum well.
- Keyhole bridge: grips the sides and needs a narrower vault, so it can perch uncomfortably on a broad one.
- Adjustable pads: spread outward to sit on a wider surface and let you set the height independently.
Check the bridge number printed inside the temple arm, the middle of the three figures. Frames for wider bridges run 20 millimeters and up, against 16 to 18 on standard sizing. A frame front reaching cheekbone width balances the whole face rather than concentrating weight centrally.
Every judgment above assumes a photograph that reports width honestly.
Distance, focal length and honest photographs
Focal length decides apparent width more than anything on this page. Phone selfie cameras use short lenses, and a short lens at close range enlarges whatever is nearest, which on a straight-on shot is the middle of the face.
Stand about five feet back, shoot with the rear camera, and crop in. An arm's-length selfie can add noticeable width across the base of the nose, so it never gives a fair reading of the index.
Light from the front rather than overhead. Top light drops a shadow along one side of the dorsum that mimics a curve the nose does not have, and side light exaggerates the soft ridge. Compare your frame against the flat and wide page for the platyrrhine range.
