A body type calculator places you on the somatotype scale, ectomorph through mesomorph to endomorph, using skeletal frame indicators instead of weight. It asks for wrist circumference, height, shoulder and hip breadth, limb proportion, and how readily you have gained or lost mass over the years. What comes back is a descriptive profile, normally a dominant component with a secondary influence, since pure single types are uncommon.

Numbers drive the reading. Height divided by wrist circumference supplies the frame estimate, and for an adult woman near 165 cm tall a wrist under 15 cm reads small, 15 to 16.5 cm reads medium and anything above reads large. Bands for a man of about 178 cm sit roughly 2 cm higher. Elbow breadth and the shoulder-to-hip spread refine it.

One caveat up front, expanded later: the somatotype came out of William Sheldon's 1940s constitutional psychology, and it describes physique. Nothing here is medical, dietary or fitness advice. Where somatotypes came from

Origins sit with the American psychologist William Herbert Sheldon, who published the three-category model in the early 1940s under constitutional psychology. Sheldon photographed thousands of subjects, rated each on three seven-point scales, and borrowed the component names from the embryonic germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm.

His claims went far past physique. Sheldon argued that build predicted temperament and even criminal tendency, and that portion of the work has been comprehensively rejected. No credible evidence links physique to personality or behavior, and the methodology behind it did not survive scrutiny.

What survived is the physical taxonomy. Heath and Carter rebuilt the rating system in the 1960s into the anthropometric method sports science still uses, scoring a person on all three components rather than handing out one label. A modern somatotype reads as three numbers, such as 3-5-2, one per component below.

The three components

Ectomorph

Long limbs relative to torso, narrow shoulders and hips, small joint circumference, low natural body fat, modest muscle mass at baseline. Gaining weight of any kind tends to be slow and losing it easy. A high metabolic rate gets cited often, though lower total mass usually explains more.

Mesomorph

Broad shoulders tapering to a narrower waist, medium to large joints, denser natural musculature, moderate body fat. Muscle arrives readily and composition moves quickly in either direction. Strength and power sports are full of this build, partly through advantage and partly through selection.

Endomorph

Wider bone through the hips and rib cage, thicker joints, shorter limbs against the torso, and a tendency to store fat around the midsection. Both muscle and fat arrive readily, and fat loss runs slower. Strength potential is often high. Most people sit between two of these, which the hybrid table sets out.

Frame indicators the calculator uses

Wrist circumference

Almost no muscle or fat covers the wrist, so its circumference proxies skeletal size well. Measure just past the wrist bone on the hand side of the styloid process, tape snug. The bands quoted earlier apply, scaled for height.

Wrist-to-height ratio

Absolute wrist size scales with height, so a ratio carries more information than the raw figure. Divide height by wrist circumference. A higher quotient means a narrower frame for your height and points ectomorphic; a lower one points endomorphic. Use one unit for both.

Shoulder-to-hip breadth

Biacromial breadth runs across the widest point of the shoulders, bi-iliac breadth across the hip bones. A large gap between them characterizes mesomorphic structure. A small gap with wide hips leans endomorphic.

Elbow breadth

Distance across the two bony prominences of the elbow, arm bent at ninety degrees, is a clean skeletal measure. Clinical frame-size tables use it, and soft tissue disturbs it less than the wrist. All four readings need care.

Getting a reliable reading

Measure bare skin, never over a sleeve. Take the wrist on your non-dominant arm, because the dominant side often runs slightly larger. Morning works best, since circumferences at the extremities drift with fluid shifts, though the wrist effect stays small.

Answer the questions about gaining and losing weight across a long window of several years, not the past month. One unusual training block or a short diet phase skews those answers and pushes the profile away from your underlying frame. Even with clean inputs, the classification has firm limits.

Accuracy and honest limitations

Somatotype is a descriptive frame, not biological destiny. That is the point most often lost. Skeletal proportions are inherited and stable, while body composition, meaning how much muscle and fat you carry, responds substantially to training load, protein and energy intake, sleep and time. Two people with matching frames can look nothing alike.

So the label tells you about starting conditions and likely rate of change, never about a ceiling. No somatotype stops anyone building strength, improving conditioning or changing composition. Reading it as a permanent constraint misreads the model, and treating it as an excuse or a verdict is worse.

The classification is coarse too. Three components summarizing a whole physique lose plenty, and self-reported answers about weight gain are shaped by memory and by whatever you were eating at the time. Expect the dominant component to be broadly right and the hybrid label to be approximate.
