Earrings for face shape (jewelry proportion matching) treat an earring as what it is: a small shape suspended beside the cheek and jaw, close enough that the eye reads both outlines together. A curved piece beside a curved jaw repeats the curve. An angular one introduces a line that was not there.

Two variables carry the decision. Outline decides whether the piece echoes the face or argues with it. Drop length decides which horizontal band it sits in, and therefore which band it widens. A stud sits at the earlobe. A short drop of 2 to 4 centimeters finishes near the mandible corner. Past 7 centimeters it clears the jaw and works on the neck instead.

The outlines are the seven this site measures, and the figures that matter are cheekbone width, jaw width and face length. An oblong runs clearly longer than wide with near-parallel sides. A triangle carries its widest measurement at the jaw. Those two want opposite earrings.

Echo or contrast, and how to choose

Contrast is the default and it holds most of the time. Angular pieces (bar drops, squared hoops, hard-edged geometric shapes) add definition beside a soft outline. Rounded pieces (circular hoops, button studs, teardrops) soften an angular one.

Echo is the exception, legitimate when a feature is the thing you want noticed. Someone who likes her cheekbones can pick a piece that lines up with them.

Scale follows separately. A piece wider than about a third of your jaw width competes with the face rather than framing it.

Oval: scale is the only constraint

Oval proportions taper gently and sit near the averages jewelry is designed against, so outline barely restricts you. Studs, hoops, drops and chandeliers all hold.

Scale is where it goes wrong. Since nothing needs correcting, an oversized piece disrupts more here than on a face that gains from width. Keep the widest point inside a third of your jaw measurement. The oval page explains why preservation beats correction.

Round: length and a hard edge

Round faces read soft and short, so the pieces that help are long and angular. A bar drop hanging 4 centimeters or more below the lobe draws a vertical beside a face that has none.

Elongated teardrops and narrow angular links do the same job at different weights. Large circular hoops repeat the curve and widen the mid-face, and button studs sit at cheek height where width is already the problem. See the round page.

Square: curves against a corner

Square outlines hold their three widths inside about 5 percent above a hard mandible corner, so curved jewelry supplies what the bone withholds. Medium hoops, round studs and drops with a rounded lower edge soften without hiding.

Keep the length between 2 and 5 centimeters so the piece sits at or below the corner rather than beside it. Hard-edged geometric studs restate the angle. See the square page.

Heart: weight at the bottom of the piece

Heart faces run widest at the brow and narrowest at a pointed chin, so the earring should carry its mass low. A teardrop widest at the base is the obvious answer, and a chandelier flaring outward as it descends does the same at more scale.

Aim for a finish at or just under the jaw corner, roughly 3 to 6 centimeters. Cluster studs and wide-topped pieces add width where there is plenty. Details at the heart page.

Diamond: clearing the cheekbone

Diamond proportions peak at the cheekbones between a narrow brow and a narrow chin, which makes mid-length pieces the thing to avoid. Anything wide at cheekbone height extends the widest line you have.

Choose slim drops long enough to fall past the jaw, adding width to the narrow lower third, or huggies tight to the lobe that add nothing. Both extremes work. The middle does not. More at the diamond page.

Oblong: short, wide and close to the lobe

Oblong faces run long, so vertical jewelry compounds the problem. Keep the drop under 3 centimeters and let the piece spread sideways.

Studs, clusters, small hoops and shapes wider than they are tall all add a horizontal beside the cheek. Long linear drops and shoulder-grazing chandeliers extend a run that was already the longest measurement on the face. See the oblong page.

Triangle: keeping mass above the jaw

Triangle outlines carry the jaw as the widest line, so jewelry should stop before it. Small hoops sitting high on the lobe, studs, and shapes tapering narrower as they descend keep visual weight in the upper half.

Hold the length under 4 centimeters so nothing reaches the jaw corner. Wide chandeliers and bottom-flared drops broaden the part already measuring widest. See the triangle page.

Drop length against face length

Length is the variable people ignore, and it decides more than outline does. Measure from the lobe downward and treat three bands separately.

Under 2 centimeters, the piece reads as a point of light at the lobe. It changes no proportion, which makes studs and huggies the safe default on a long face and a wasted opportunity on a short one.

Between 2 and 6 centimeters, the piece sits inside the lower third and widens whichever band it lands in. Ending at cheekbone height widens the mid-face. Ending at the mandible corner widens the jaw. Ending just below the corner softens it.

Past 7 centimeters, the earring leaves the face and works against the neck. Long pieces flatter a long neck and crowd a short one, whatever the outline above them. So take the length decision first, then pick an outline for the band you chose.

Metal, undertone and the color question

Metal choice runs on undertone, the persistent cast beneath surface skin color, rather than on how light or deep that skin is. Cool undertones, where veins read blue and skin flushes pink, sit well against silver, platinum and white gold. Warm undertones, where veins read green and skin tans golden, sit well against yellow gold, brass and copper. Neutral undertones take either.

Contrast level works alongside it. Where hair, skin and eyes sit close in tone, a delicate polished metal reads harmonious and a heavy matte piece dominates. Where your coloring runs high-contrast, a substantial piece holds its own.

How your hairstyle moves the answer

Hair decides how much of the jaw is visible, and every recommendation above assumes the jaw can be seen. An updo exposes the mandible corner, the neck and the full outline, so the earring is read directly against bone. That is when contrast matters most.

Hair worn down changes the arithmetic twice. It hides part of the lobe, so a small piece disappears and needs scaling up. And the cut is already doing proportion work: a blunt lob finishing at the jaw adds width there, so a wide drop at the same height doubles an effect you may not want doubled.

So match the two decisions rather than making them separately. Pull hair back and the earring leads. Wear it down and the cut leads, with the earring filling whatever the cut left alone. The hairstyle hub covers what a given cut is doing.

Jewelry proportion matching, then, sets one small shape against the outline it hangs beside. Contrast is the default and echo the deliberate exception, with scale held inside a third of the jaw measurement. Oval took scale as its only limit, round took length and a hard edge, square took curves, heart took weight low on the piece, diamond took either extreme but not the middle, oblong took short and wide, and triangle took mass above the corner. Drop length decided which band gets widened, undertone decided the metal, and an updo decided whether the earring leads or follows.
