A body shape calculator is a ratio tool that compares three circumferences, bust, natural waist and hips, and names the silhouette your proportions match. Size never enters the arithmetic. Two people wearing the same dress size can land in different categories, and two people four sizes apart can share one, because only the relationship between the three numbers counts.
Five classifications come out of it: hourglass, pear, inverted triangle, rectangle and apple. The rules are percentage thresholds, not fixed centimeters. Bust and hip are weighed against each other at a 5 percent band, and the waist is weighed against the larger of the two at a 25 percent band. Those two figures decide everything.
Knowing the answer has one practical use. Ready-to-wear clothing is graded from a small set of standard blocks, each assuming a particular bust-to-waist-to-hip relationship. Your category tells you which cuts need the least alteration and which pull at the seams.

Measurement error causes more wrong results than anything else, and most of it comes from a tape that is tilted or pulled tight. Use a flexible dressmaker's tape, stand relaxed in front of a mirror, and work over bare skin or thin clothing rather than a sweater or a padded coat.
Take each one twice and use the second reading. Exhale normally and let the tape sit snug without compressing, close enough that one finger slides underneath. Keep one unit throughout. Centimeters or inches both work, a mixture does not. Those three readings then meet the threshold rules.
Thresholds are expressed as percentage differences, which is why the same rules hold at every size. Bust and hip are compared first. The waist is then compared against whichever of those two is larger.

Work an example. Bust 92 cm, waist 68 cm, hips 94 cm. Chest and seat differ by roughly 2 percent, inside the 5 percent band. The middle reading of 68 against a larger figure of 94 comes out about 28 percent below it, past the second threshold. Hourglass.
Now move the middle number to 76 cm and nothing else. That gap drops to roughly 19 percent, short of the threshold, and the same person classifies as a rectangle. One measurement flipped the answer, which is why waist accuracy matters more than the other two.
Guidance here comes from conventional dressmaking, not obligation. Each note describes how a cut interacts with a proportion. Ignore all of it if you like.
Garments that follow the middle rather than skimming past it read as intended: wrap dresses, princess seams, high-waisted trousers, belted coats. Boxy straight shapes hide the definition and add visual width. Buy to fit the largest of your three readings, then take the waist in.
Structure and interest above the waist balance the line. Look for shoulder detail, boat and square necklines, and lighter or patterned tops over darker straight-leg or bootcut bottoms. A-line skirts skim the hip instead of gripping it. Trousers usually need the waistband taken in after fitting the seat.
Quieten the shoulder line and add volume low. V-necks, raglan sleeves, unpadded set-in sleeves, full skirts, wide-leg trousers and hip detailing all do that job. Halter necks and heavy shoulder embellishment push the widest line wider still.
Since the middle is not naturally marked, the garment has to mark it. Belts, peplums, wrap fronts and cropped jackets ending at the natural waist all create that break. Column dresses and shift shapes suit the same body when a clean vertical line is what you want.
Vertical lines, open necklines and empire waists lift the eye and lengthen the torso. Structured jackets worn open build a vertical frame. Fabric with some body holds its own shape rather than clinging, and straight-leg or bootcut trousers balance a fuller midsection.
Accuracy tracks your tape. A two-centimeter slip at the middle reading moves a borderline result from hourglass to rectangle, or from rectangle to apple. If the answer surprises you, remeasure before you accept it.
Three circumferences also cannot describe a whole body. Height, torso length, shoulder width, rib cage depth, limb proportion and where you carry weight all change how clothes hang, and none enter the calculation. Two people classified as pears can need different alterations, one being long in the torso and the other short.
Results near a threshold are ambiguous rather than wrong. A gap of 24 percent is not meaningfully different from 26 percent, yet the tool still prints a single label. Read a borderline answer as sitting between two silhouettes and use the guidance for both.
