Reading the jaw angle that decides it

Width will not help, since both shapes carry the same near-equal length and width. Read the mandible instead. Trace the side of the face downward and watch what happens where it heads for the chin. If it bends at a point, the shape is square. If it curves continuously, the shape is round.

Checking your jaw angle from a photo

- Find the corner. The point on each side where the vertical edge heads toward the chin.
- Read the turn. A visible angle points to square, a smooth curve points to round.
- Check both sides. They should agree; if one clenches, retake the frame.

Why a round face reads square
The confusion comes from lighting and framing, not bone. Because the two shapes share the same near-equal width and length, a photo that adds or hides a shadow at the jaw can swing the reading either way, and the eye trusts the shadow over the structure.
Three things move the corner.
- Lighting. A shadow under the mandible can carve a false corner onto a soft jaw, squaring a round face in the image.
- Weight. Fuller cheeks and a fuller jaw blur a real corner, rounding a square face that is genuinely angular underneath.
- Head tilt. A slight downward tilt flattens the jaw line and can invent or erase the turn.
A face with a lightly rounded corner sits between the two, sharper than a full arc but softer than a hard angle. That middle reading is common and honest.
How the styling goals reverse for hair
The distinction flips the whole brief. A round face wants more structure, so the goal is to add angles the outline lacks: longer layers that fall past the jaw, crown height for length, and side parts that cut vertical lines into a soft shape. Sharpen what curves.
A square face wants the opposite. Its corner is already strong, so the aim is to soften it with waves that break the straight sides, layers opening below the jaw, and a side-swept front over a blunt one.
