Length sets an oval apart from an oblong: an oval sits near 1.5 times its cheekbone width, while an oblong pushes past that figure with a longer midface and straighter sides. Both are taller than they are wide, so the ratio, not the overall look, is what decides which one you have.
The two shapes belong to the same long family, which is why they trade places so often. Each reads as a vertical outline, each keeps a moderate width across the cheekbones, then each avoids the hard corner of a square jaw. The eye sees length on both and stops there. The measurement carries on past where the eye quits.
An oval keeps its length in proportion. The face runs about 1.5 times the cheekbone width, the jaw sits slightly narrower than the cheekbones, and the sides curve gently inward toward a soft chin. An oblong extends beyond that ratio. Its sides run near-parallel rather than tapering, and the extra height gathers in the midface, the span between the cheekbones and the jaw. Balanced length versus stretched length is the split.

The balanced proportions of an oval ratio
Oval proportions read as long but settled. The face measures about 1.5 times its cheekbone width, a ratio that keeps height and width in a comfortable relationship rather than an extreme one. Cheekbones mark the widest line, and the shape stays balanced top to bottom.
Taper defines the sides. The forehead sits a little narrower than the cheekbones, the jaw narrows further, and the edges curve inward toward a soft, lightly tapered chin. That inward curve is a quiet but real tell against an oblong, whose sides stay straighter.
An oval face needs no correction because the ratio already sits in the balanced zone. Stretch that same outline past 1.5, straighten the sides, and lengthen the midface, and the shape crosses into oblong. The figure is the boundary.
The added length of an oblong midface
Oblong proportions take the oval and extend it. The face runs clearly longer than it is wide, past the oval's 1.5, and most of the surplus height sits in the elongated midface below the cheekbones. The forehead often reads tall as part of the same stretch.
Straighter sides mark the shape. Where an oval curves inward, an oblong face holds its sides near-parallel, so the outline reads as a longer four-sided shape with softened ends rather than a taper. The width stays moderate and even down the face.
The jaw keeps a gentle finish, never turning the sharp corner of a square. So an oblong is length first: a drawn-out midface, parallel sides, and a ratio that climbs above where an oval settles. Put that stretch next to the oval's balance and the difference is how far the height runs.
The ratio that draws the line
One figure divides them. Measure the face length, divide by the cheekbone width, and read the result. Near 1.5 is oval. Climbing past it, with a visibly long midface, is oblong.
The sides back up the number. An oval curves inward from cheekbone to jaw, so the width narrows as the eye drops. An oblong runs parallel, holding its width most of the way down before the jaw. When the ratio sits on the fence, the side taper breaks the tie.
So an ambiguous photo needs the ruler and a look at the sides, not a study of the chin, which softens on both. Length decides first. Side shape confirms. The two together separate a balanced oval from a stretched oblong even in a close call.

The bottom row matches and the jaw rows sit close, which is where the confusion starts. The length row, the sides row and the midface row carry the decision. A balanced ratio with curving sides is oval; a stretched ratio with parallel sides and a long midface is oblong. Read the top row, then check the sides.
Working out your own length-to-width ratio
A front-on photo gives the answer, taken with care. Face the camera at eye level, sweep all hair off the forehead and jaw, and hold a neutral expression so the outline reads at its true width.
- Take the length. Center of the hairline down to the bottom of the chin.
- Take the width. Cheekbone to cheekbone at the widest point.
- Divide. Around 1.5 is oval, comfortably above is oblong.
Then glance at the sides. Curving inward supports the oval reading, running parallel supports the oblong one. Keep the chin level, since a lifted chin shortens the face and can shrink an oblong into an oval figure. Repeat on a second frame, or let the detector place the 468 landmarks and return the ratio without a ruler.
Why a long oval reads as oblong
The overlap sits in the shared length. Because both shapes are taller than they are wide, a face near the boundary looks like either one at a glance, and the eye cannot judge a ratio it has no reference for. Only the measurement, plus the side taper, splits them.
Three things push the reading around.
- Hairstyle. Crown height and long straight lengths add apparent length, stretching an oval toward an oblong look.
- Weight. A leaner face reads longer and narrower, nudging a balanced oval past its ratio in the image.
- Camera height. A low lens elongates the face, exaggerating length on an oval that measures within range.
A face near a 1.55 ratio genuinely sits on the border between the two. That in-between reading is normal variation, and the side taper usually becomes the tiebreaker.
Where the two styling plans differ for hair
The split changes the goal. An oval already sits in balance, so the plan is to hold it there and avoid adding length: no tall crown volume, no long straight curtains that stretch the reading, and layers that keep width through the middle. Protect the proportion.
An oblong needs length cut and width added. A fringe shortens the tall forehead, fullness at ear height broadens the sides, and blunt mid-lengths stop the vertical pull.
